New Baby shopping guide
You’re having a baby! Congratulations!
Having a baby is exciting, nerve wracking and frankly scary time. You obviously want to give the best to your new baby. But there are so many options and as we know babies little bodies can’t handle the toxins that are so present in our world today. It would be nice to know that every product produced for our children was free of dangerous toxins and heavy metals that can lead to things like autism, ADHD and overall dysfunction. But unfortunately, MANY products produced for our children do contain these harmful toxins. So I have compiled a list of some of the things we used when our daughter was born.
I wanted to give her the best. I know you do too. Hopefully this list will make things a bit easier on you!
Probably the most important thing you’ll want to get, an organic crib mattress! Babies need very little, much less than the big box stores would lead you to believe. But if you’re baby is sleeping in crib for 12+ hours a day, the last thing you want is them breathing in dangerous chemicals like arsnic, antimony, phthalates and all the other stuff that is in most traditional crib mattresses! Luckily, this one is free from all the yucky stuff. It’s also firm and safe for baby but also has a toddler side, so you can easily flip it over to grow with your baby. And it was produced in the USA!
Crib Sheets and Cover
Another important thing to have 100% organic. These are the brands we used and I love them both. The sheets are so soft and cuddly. The cover has no smell! Many of the other covers on the market have very high VOC’s and smell awful. That’s not what I want my kiddos sleeping on.
Glass or Stainless Baby Bottles
Even if you plan on breastfeeding, these are good to have around in case you ever leave baby. Even if plastic bottles are Bispenol-A (BPA) free, the regulations on plastics is not extensive. Many of them contain BPS which has similar effects on the body as BPA and is also an endocrine disruptor. Many also contain phthalates which are known to cause cancer, liver damage, and effect the reproductive system. These toxins are stored in fat cells and are very difficult to detox. There are both stainless steel and glass options available depending on your preference. While they aren’t as light as plastic, they benefits are worth it. The stainless steel option listed also turns into a sippy cup and can grow with your baby.
This is a MUST have for a new baby. There are EMF’s everywhere now with WiFi, cell phones, smart meters and just normal household electronics. This blanket helps protect that sweet little baby from all those harmful EMF’s. Read more about EMFs and their detrimental health effects on children, here.
There are so many bouncers on the market that are made with non organic materials that you don’t want touching that precious baby skin! This one is made with organic materials, has no batteries or cords (EMF free!) and moves with the movement of the baby. It’s super light, only 5lbs! And can be used up until 2 years old. It’s a great investment and babies love its smooth motion. Another good clean option is the Nuna Leaf. However, since I haven’t tried that one personally, I cant say much about it other than I know it is a solid organic purchase.
Fluoride Free Water
A must have for everyone but especially during the important developmental baby phase. Fluoride is a known neurotoxin and weakens the blood brain barrier. Iodine can help offset the effects but ideally it should be avoided at all costs. To do this, you can purchase bottled water or a reverse osmosis (RO) system. RO’s do remove fluoride but also remove beneficial minerals which need to be added back into the drinking water. Another option is a Berekey Filtration system, which removes up to 95% of fluoride. These do require a bit of maintenance. So if you are a homeowner and an RO system is in your budget, they may be a better option. We do not use an RO system so I can not recommend one.
Baby Wash and Lotion
Personally, for little babies I just bath with water and some coconut oil. Unless baby is actually getting dirty, you don’t need to wash tiny babies regularly. We used soap about once every 2 weeks unless baby got especially sweaty, spit up or had a blow out. I was so shocked when I found out the “clean” baby products I was using with my first were filled with harmful chemicals! Download the “Think Dirty” app to find out how your bath products rank.
Essential Oil Diffuser
This doubles as both a humidifier and a diffuser. A drop of lavender essential oil can be so relaxing for a good night sleep (for both mom and baby!) These also make a great night light. Be sure to use the red light setting only past 5pm as to not disrupt melatonin production.
A must for a new baby! This true HEPA air purifier with UV-C sanitation filters mold and kills bacteria, viruses and fungi. It’s extremely quiet and not a complete eye sore for your new baby nursery. It also comes with a 5 year warranty. Also if you have a diaper pail in the room it will keep any smells at bay. But for health reasons air purifiers are a must have. Ideally, you should get one for each room in your house. This one is a smaller one, ideal for a nursery.
Baby carriers are a must for any new mom if you ever want to get anything done. But this one is just amazing. It is made from 100% organic cotton that is super soft for babies skin. It also is usable for up to 45 lbs so it grows with your baby. Its ergonomic design is comfortable on your back and safe for baby and works with a newborn with no insert!
Obviously this does not include every single thing you need for a new baby. But if you are looking to give your baby a toxin free environment, these products are needed and not always thought of! Things like baby blankets and pajamas should always be organic with NO flame retardant. Flame retardant are in the same chemical family as DDT and PCB’s which build up in the environment and in your body. They are known carcinogens and can cause developmental delays. One of the chemicals in flame retardants polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE’s) builds up heavily in breast milk. So be sure your sleepwear definitely and mattress hopefully are organic and free of these harmful toxins. Also be sure to use a free & clear detergent or home make one.
